Ok, so I read up a bit here. Aside from the loose definition gained from some of the write ups I’d been attracted to recently, I thought I might take a half hour to google the term and see what opinions were out there.
After a good few online magazines, some interesting blogs and news articles later, I’d like to think that it’s not really about ‘Who fits into the Millennial category’ in terms of when they were born, but it seems more to be a question of ‘Who you are at your core”, what value systems you have and what ideals you envision for your life regardless of what age you are. I know people of varying ages that are riding this wave of the Millennial for all of its positives and I myself have traditionally taken pride in my true Gen X nature (cue memories of an upbringing steeped in the 80s) but have found that I in fact have inevitably been swept up by the shift that is taking this world by storm that I believe has the Millennial mindset at it’s core.
What is a Millennial?
Wikipedia defines Millennials (also known as the Millennial Generation or Generation Y) as “the demographic cohort following Generation X.” Further, it seems that there are no precise dates when the generation starts and ends. Researchers and commentators use birth years ranging from the early 1980s to the early 2000s. As mentioned above, this is not the most important defining factor.
Millennials share a certain world view and certain values that are influencing the positive shifts in our world. It’s not about when you were born… it’s about who you ARE, what you value and the ideals you envision for your life and our world.
So that brings us to what I’d consider to be the 3 top defining characteristics of the Millennial as follows:
#1 Millennials want to smash the “Status Quo”
They want to reinvent traditional systems, based on new values, with new world views. Most of all, they are passionate about standing up for what they believe in, whether it be equality, a sustainable environment, a just society, freedom of speech or something similar.
#2 Millennials are all about Creativity, Connection and Expression
People with a Millennial mindset are fuelled by something inside of them, a passion, a message, an idea that they know they have to share with the world, although they may not know exactly how this could provide an income, they are open to learning and believe that expressing themselves creatively is one of the key aspects to career and life fulfilment. They know that by connecting both within themselves and also externally with their communities, they will be happy.
#3 Millennials are High Tech and Entrepreneurial at heart
They don’t fit into the defined jobs and roles of the past and are innovating completely new ways of earning money and creating a life using technology. They don’t quite “fit in” to the typical careers and jobs available in the traditional marketplace but most of all, they have a strong disconnection from the old ‘corporate paradigm’ that was so intrinsically instilled into their parents and grandparents. Whilst they understand that there are people that still do take value from living within the corporate model, they know this structure doesn’t work for them.
We are right bang, smack in the middle of the “age of the Millennials”. We are much more globally minded and we identify more with the entrepreneurial values of creativity, freedom and risk than the values of the past of stability, safety and security. There is something so rewarding about being able to pursue your purpose and passion by crafting an online business in alignment with these things – one that has the potential to connect you globally.
