Dr Amen speaks about The Brain
Today on The Aware Show, I listened to Dr Amen who is a physician, child and adult psychiatrist, brain imaging specialist, bestselling author, Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the CEO and medical director of Amen Clinics, Inc. (ACI).
Dr Amen is the author of (among other books) the New York Times bestsellers, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life and Magnificent Mind At Any Age.
The theme of the entire Aware show tele-conference series was Managing life during changing times so in line with that theme, Dr Amen begun the show by speaking about the impact our brain plays on managing our lives. He asserted that “You can have more control over the way your brain works on a daily basis”, and stated that one of the ways to improve your brain, is to improve your thoughts!
Damage to the Brain
First and foremost, Dr Amen described how a study done shows our co-ordination centre, and memory centre’s were both worse off when people thought about all the bad things about their lives!
Shocking! So all the negative things we think do not only effect the our emotional state, our behaviour and our ultimate results in life, but they also physically effect our brain.
The other obvious substances to effect the brain negatively were:
- Alcohol – which was stated as a NIGHTMARE for the brain
- Caffeine and
- Environmental toxins such as Painters, Nail salons etc…
Improving the Brain
- Physical exercise was also stated as important (as we all know), however the clarification that Dr Amen made was that exercise increases blood flow to the brain, boosts a chemical called BD, boosts seratonin and is one of the best anti-depressants around.
- Sleep was also stated as imperative to making improvements to the brain (sleeping at least 7 hours a night helps with blood flow to the brain).
