Coaching has been around for a very long time, in fact some aspects of it including the method of asking questions to help people to find their own answers, have been around for centuries and can be dated back to early Greek philosophical times. During the 20th century though, the reputation of coaching as a powerful method of personal development increased, especially in the world of business.
How It All Started
Private Coaching Schools and Training Providers started being established mainly in the United States first with about 1000 coaches existing in the USA by 1996, however since the year 2000, growth has slowed down in the US and is now booming in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, UK, Canada and Europe. As you may have read already on the My Story page of this website, I first discovered coaching in 2007 when I began attending Business & Personal Development seminars and reading books on the law of attraction, mindset, emotions, psychology, leadership and communication. In particular, I discovered NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and I was hooked!
There is a definite need for coaching specialisation now that it is becoming such a popular avenue for development of managers and small businesses and I have found a space in the coaching market that really hits home for me. I have a special place in my heart for the work from home niche, especially as it relates to mothers as I am a mum and have been struggling with the challenges of working from home whilst juggling family life for nearly 10yrs now. I’m extremely excited to have a focus that I have such a passionate connection to on a personal level.
Coaching vs. Therapy
While the coaching market is similar to the therapy environment, there are many differences between them and there are also significant differences between the various coaching approaches as well. We will look further into these differences in future posts however, in very simplistic terms, aside from differences in education requirements for coaches compared to therapists, one of the major variations is that coaches generally help people achieve their goals and therapists help people address and resolve problems.
The basic assumption with a coaching client is that they are already well mentally and emotionally and are ready to receive guidance, motivation and instruction on how to implement their goals.
How I Can Coach You?
I am most excited about the Personal Empowerment, Motivation and Leadership Development aspects of Coaching. I am equally fascinated by the way that we as coaches can analyse the topic of Human Excellence with the possibility of touching on subjects such as Communication, Psychology, Philosophy & Neuroscience. In addition all of my coaching programmes have a strong business and technology focus.
It’s important to clarify that when I say Leadership Development, I mean it not necessarily in the corporate sense as a manager or team leader but more from the angle of taking ‘personal responsibility’. Here, I’m talking about building up leadership capabilities relating to all areas of your life for example, being a great leader within intra-personal interactions (self-talk) as well as inter-personal interactions (with other people).
My Coaching Approach
If you’ve just recently landed on this site, my expertise is on the subject of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) which in my own words is a set of guiding principles that are used as tools to consciously de-construct the perceptions we have and to build up new processes of putting meaning to the things that are occuring in our realities so that they can be as empowering as possible. See my post about NLP here.
In essence it’s about consciously creating our reality as we are actively perceiving it… I have lived a conscious lifestyle of this sort for about the past 9yrs and because of the magic I have seen happen in my own experience, I’m fired up to help others see the possibilities that are out there too! You will find more background information about who I am on the ‘My Story‘ page and Product and Service information can be found under ‘Programmes’.
